Summary: Chess files and personal app data are generally processed locally. An internet connection is used for the public tournament catalog and Google Play Billing. The optional location feature uses only approximate device location; that location is not sent to the developer's tournament service.

2. Purpose of the app and general principle
PGN Analyse is used to load, search, enter, replay and export chess games, work with PGN and FEN data, and find and organize public chess tournaments.
The app does not require registration or a dedicated user account. It contains no advertising and the developer does not use analytics or tracking services.
3. Local processing of PGN, FEN and exported files
PGN and FEN data are processed on the device. Files are opened only when the user explicitly selects them through Android or passes them to the app using Android's Open with functionality.
PGN, PDF, CSV and ICS files generated by the app are stored locally or passed to a target selected by the user through Android sharing functions. Chess-file contents are not uploaded to servers operated by the developer.
4. App data stored locally
Depending on how the app is used, local data can include:
- game favorites represented by a normalized game fingerprint,
- tournament favorites,
- saved search locations including label, coordinates and country,
- personal tournament notes,
- app settings and recently used search parameters,
- a local cache of the public tournament catalog,
- a locally verified Premium entitlement marker for offline use.
This information is not transmitted to the developer as a user profile. Depending on Android and device settings, parts of local app data may be included in the device's system backup. The developer has no direct access to such system backups.
5. Public tournament catalog and internet connection
The tournament search periodically synchronizes a central, editorially maintained public tournament catalog. The app downloads a JSON snapshot from the tournament service and stores the last valid copy locally for continued use.
When the catalog is downloaded, technically necessary connection data is generated, in particular IP address, timestamp, requested resource and technical client information. The server or hosting provider may process such data in ordinary access and security logs where necessary for operation, troubleshooting and security.
The tournament service does not receive: PGN/FEN contents, game favorites, personal tournament notes, saved search locations or the device's current location.
6. Location feature and place search
For radius searches, users may optionally grant Android's approximate-location permission (ACCESS_COARSE_LOCATION). The app does not request precise-location permission.
- The location feature is used only when the user actively invokes it.
- The resulting coordinates are used inside the app for the selected search location and distance calculation.
- The current location is not sent as a parameter to the central tournament service.
- A search location can alternatively be entered manually.
To turn a device position into a place name, or a manually entered place name into coordinates, the app uses Android's Geocoder. The technical geocoding and location services involved depend on the device, Android version and platform provider. Those system services are governed by the privacy terms of the relevant device or platform provider.
7. Google Play Billing and Premium
PGN Analyse Premium is a one-time purchase through Google Play. The app uses the official Google Play Billing interface to retrieve product information, process purchases and restore an existing entitlement.
Payment details and Google account information are not processed or stored by the developer. Payment processing is handled by Google. For more information, see the Google Privacy Policy.
8. Calendar, ICS and Android sharing
Calendar and sharing functions run only after an explicit user action. When exporting to a calendar, the selected tournament data is passed to the calendar app chosen by the user. When sharing an ICS, PGN, PDF or CSV file, the user chooses the receiving app.
A personal tournament note is included in a calendar/ICS export only when the user explicitly enables that option for the specific export. PGN Analyse does not use a direct Google Calendar API.
9. External links
Tournament entries may contain links to original sources or announcements. When such a link is opened, the user leaves the app and the privacy terms of the relevant external website and browser app apply.
10. Permissions
The app uses the following Android permissions and system capabilities in particular:
- Internet: refreshing the tournament catalog and communicating with Google Play Billing.
- Approximate location: optional, for radius searches.
- File picker and sharing: access only to files selected or created by the user through Android system functions.
The app does not request automatic access to contacts, camera, microphone or personal photos.
11. No advertising, tracking or usage analytics
PGN Analyse contains no advertising. The developer does not use advertising-profile SDKs, analytics services or user-specific tracking.
12. Legal basis
Where personal technical connection data is processed when the tournament service is accessed, this is done to provide the service requested by the user and to maintain secure and reliable operation (Art. 6(1)(b) and (f) GDPR). Use of Google Play is additionally governed by the user's contractual and privacy relationship with Google.
13. Children and minors
The app is intended generally for chess players and does not contain content harmful to minors. It does not create developer-operated user accounts or personal profiles of children.
14. Data-subject rights
Where the developer processes personal data, applicable law may provide rights including access, rectification, erasure, restriction of processing and objection. Users also have the right to lodge a complaint with a competent data protection supervisory authority.
Many items stored by the app exist only locally on the device and can therefore be managed or deleted only by the user on that device.
15. Changes to this Privacy Policy
This Privacy Policy will be updated when app features, services used or legal requirements change. The current version is published on this website.
